Since 1885, the Little Sisters of the Poor have cared for NW Ohio and SE Michigan’s needy elderly, offering them a home in which they can feel a sense of respect, security and love as they journey toward eternity. For the first 85 years, Sacred Heart Home was located on Starr Avenue in east Toledo. In 1969, the Sacred Heart Home opened on Navarre Avenue in Oregon. This home was replaced with a new building on the same property in 2003.

The Sacred Heart Home offers a continuum of care from independent living apartments to licensed residential and nursing care. Currently, the Sisters provide nursing care and assisted living facilities for 50 people with an additional 23 residents who live in the apartments. The Little Sisters of the Poor welcome men and women of at least 60 years of age with very limited resources regardless of race, religion or national origin.

The Sacred Heart Senior Center was established in 2004 and has a capacity for welcoming 50 seniors from nearby communities into the Home. The Center is open six days a week. Those who attend have the opportunity to participate in all the activities and programs of the Home, including three meals a day. The Senior Center has been an extension of the home into the community and has allowed the Little Sisters to improve the quality of life for many more needy seniors in our area.
